Your hive has survived the winter – now what? Start your second year strong by learning how to manage an overwintered hive to prevent swarms while boosting your hive population in a sustainable way. This class will begin with a lesson on swarm ecology by providing context for why and how the hive makes the sophisticated decision to swarm. You will then learn how to assess your hive population and swarm potential in the spring and the various techniques available for splitting your hive. This class will conclude with additional tips on how to manage your spring hive to prevent a honey-bound situation and to maximize space within your hive.
